Franco-German Council of Economic Experts

Tasks

The Franco-German Council of independent Economic Experts is a permanent, bilateral body that was established by France and Germany on the basis of the Treaty of Aachen. It is independent and tasked with making policy recommendations on economic issues in which both countries have shared interests. The Council of Experts reports to the Franco-German Financial and Economic Council, which consists of both countries’ Ministers of Finance and Economic Affairs and the Heads of the two central banks.

The comments by the Franco-German Council of independent Economic Experts are to be regarded as independent contributions to the debate. They do not reflect the position of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy or of the Federal Government.

Members

On the German side, the advisory board is chaired by the Chair of the German Council of Economic Experts (SVR), ​Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Monika Schnitzer. For project-specific purposes, she may appoint up to four additional researchers to the German delegation of the expert council. Service on the advisory board is an honorary position held in a personal capacity. Members may not be part of the government or of the legislative bodies at the federal or Länder level, nor may they be members of the French government or legislature.

Genesis

The Franco-German Council of Economic Experts is rooted in Section 20(2) of the ​Treaty of Aachen. It was established at the 50th meeting of the franco-german financial and economic council, which took place in Paris on 19 September 2019.
