The D-Mark becomes legal tender in the western occupation zones and western sectors of Berlin in 1948. Every citizen receives a pay-out of 40 DM. The window displays are full again following the monetary reform. In the Soviet occupation zone, the so-called "Ost Mark", later known as the "Mark of the GDR", is launched at the end of 1948.

On 25 May 1957, the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community (EEC) is signed in Rome. The treaty is to create freedom of movement of goods, services and people in the six member states of Belgium, the Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Luxembourg and the Netherlands by the middle of 1968. All import quotas are abolished by 1962 and all inland duties by 1968. The EEC forms the basis of today’s European Union.
