On the fringes of the seventh German-Ukrainian Business Forum in December 2020, LEG Projects Ukraine GmbH & Co. KG was handed a funding decision from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) for 7 million euros. In this way, the BMWE is supporting the subsidiary of the Leipzig energy company in working with local partners to develop production capacities for renewable hydrogen and new sustainable supply chains locally.

The project will see the construction of the first pilot plant for green hydrogen in the Mukacheve region of western Ukraine. It will consist of a 4 MWp PV plant and a 2 MW electrolyser. In a later step, the plan is to further expand the plant and scale it up to a large industrial level. The experience gained will help to fulfil regulatory guidelines, such as safety-related aspects of the plants, but also requirements for feeding into the regional and superordinate gas grid in Ukraine, and to scale up plants at neighbouring locations. The goal is to produce renewable hydrogen for industrial applications in Ukraine and for export to the European Union.
