Green iron production plant

In Namibia, the Oshivela project has created the basis for the climate-friendly production of iron using renewable hydrogen. In November 2024, the electrolyser, the last component for the first green ironworks in Africa, was delivered.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE)) has provided 13 million euros in funding for the project as part of its funding guideline for international hydrogen projects. Three German companies are involved in the consortium: HyIron GmbH, TS Elino GmbH and LSF Energy GmbH & Co. KG.

The technology used in Oshivela is designed to support the transformation to a green iron and steel industry that uses sustainable hydrogen to replace the use of coal or natural gas. Good local conditions for the cost-effective production of climate-friendly hydrogen using a PV system and a 12-megawatt electrolyser, as well as local iron ore deposits, make this possible in Namibia.

This will achieve an annual savings potential of 27,000 tonnes of CO2. This contributes to the necessary reduction of greenhouse gases in this energy-intensive industry. At the same time, the project opens up opportunities for the development of green value chains in Namibia. A second and third phase to expand the plant are already in the planning stage.
