The funding guidelines for international hydrogen projects support the timely and targeted development of a global market for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, the testing of German technologies abroad, and the preparation and implementation of import routes to Germany.

Under Module 1, the BMWE supports the construction of production facilities for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives, as well as accompanying or preparatory scientific analyses and studies. This includes the feasibility studies customary in project development. Funding for storage and transport facilities and components is available in conjunction with funding for production facilities. German companies may receive a proportionate contribution towards the costs of investments and feasibility studies for projects outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland. Universities and research institutions may receive funding for accompanying research work. Up to 30 million euros in funding is available per project for the years 2027 to 2030. A prerequisite is a high level of German and European value creation within the project, as well as the preparation of potential import routes to Germany.

Funding from the BMFTR is provided via Module 2, which supports accompanying projects in basic and industrial research, scientific studies and training measures linked to an international project under Module 1. Funding is provided for accompanying projects across the entire hydrogen value chain – from production, through storage and transport, including overarching, systemic issues.

The 2025 funding round attracted a great deal of interest from German companies. Around 20 project grants will result from this by the end of 2026. The strong market response underlines the importance of the funding guidelines for international hydrogen projects in terms of the deployment, testing and strategic international positioning of German technologies as the global market takes off.

Interested companies and research institutions once again have the opportunity to submit project outlines as part of a third call for proposals, with a deadline of 17 December 2026.

The funding scheme is administered by Projektträger Jülich (PtJ).
