Under Module 1 of the funding guidelines for international hydrogen projects, the BMWE supports investment in facilities for the production of renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. In addition, scientific analyses, feasibility studies and other preparatory investigations may be funded. Storage and transport facilities may be considered provided they form part of the funded production facilities. Companies with a branch or permanent establishment in Germany, as well as research institutions, may receive grants for investment costs of up to 30 million euros for the years 2027 to 2030. A prerequisite is a high level of German and European value added within the project, as well as the preparation of potential import routes to Germany. Under Module 2, the BMFTR supports accompanying research projects at technology maturity levels 1 to 3. Measures for the training and development of young scientists and business professionals may also form part of the funded projects.

Companies interested in funding have the opportunity to submit their project outline as part of a third call for proposals. The deadline for submission is 17 December 2026.

The specific eligibility criteria for funding and the framework conditions of the application process are set out in the funding guidelines. On 15 October 2026, from 11.30 am to 1 pm, interested companies will also have the opportunity to find out more about the funding guidelines and the relevant funding opportunities during a digital information event (in German).

Information on the process for the current funding round is available on the website of the Projektträger Jülich (PtJ). There, interested parties will also find the relevant templates for project outlines and supplementary guidance on submitting applications for Module 1 and Module 2. The procedure for evaluating the submitted project outlines is also explained. Projektträger Jülich also advises potential applicants, on behalf of the BMWE, on matters relating to the funding and application process.

Notes:

An adjustment of the funding conditions to the state aid legislation planned for the turn of the year 2026/2027 is currently being drawn up. The planned funding is still subject to the adoption of the 2027 budget.
