Funding is available for project-related research and development activities and the demonstration of innovative technical solutions. In individual cases, studies in one or more of the following areas of applied energy research (from technology readiness level 3) will also be funded in the form of individual or joint projects.

Research funding in energy research aims both at the continuous improvement of known technologies and processes and at the exploration of new technical approaches. Projects that help to make energy technologies and processes more efficient, cost-effective or reliable, improve system stability and increase the sustainability or social acceptance of technology options are eligible for funding.

The funding announcement covers the following topics:

  • Technologies for energy supply
  • Energy infrastructure for transport and storage
  • Energy use and energy efficiency
  • Energy systems and system integration
  • Overarching aspects of applied energy research

Funding for research, development and demonstration projects is generally provided in the form of joint and individual projects. In addition, there are the specific funding formats ‘Living Labs of the energy transition’ and ‘Microprojects’.
