The Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE) continues to support the global implementation of projects for renewable hydrogen and its derivatives. With the publication of the third funding call, German companies now have the opportunity to submit project proposals under the Funding Guideline for International Hydrogen Projects. The submission deadline is December 17, 2026.

The funding guideline for international hydrogen projects aims to strengthen the use of German hydrogen technologies in industrial production facilities, as well as to prepare new markets and import routes for hydrogen products. Funding for project-related feasibility studies is also still part of the program. German companies can receive funding of up to EUR 30 million per project for the years 2027 to 2030. Major requirements are that the project is carried out outside the European Economic Area and Switzerland and ensures significant German and European value creation. Funding is still subject to the approval of the federal budget 2027.

With this instrument, BMWE is specifically strengthening Germany's expertise in hydrogen technologies in international projects. German mid-sized companies such as technology suppliers and project developers are a main focus for funding to test innovative international projects and establish new markets.

The application process for funding is divided into two stages: First, German companies are invited to submit project proposals. As a second step, promising proposals that are prioritized by BMWE will then be invited to submit a full application. Final funding agreements are expected in the second half of 2027.

So far, BMWE supports projects through the Funding Guideline in Chile, Namibia, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Serbia. More project funding is expected to be granted soon in the context of the funding call in 2025: In Southern Africa, the MENA region, Asia, South America, and Australia, projects will be supported by BMWE for the production of renewable hydrogen, ammonia, methanol, sustainable aviation fuels, or green steel, amongst others.

On October 15, 2026, interested companies will have the opportunity to learn about funding opportunities and the procedure for submitting project proposals in a digital information event. Registration is already possible.
